Modern Master's Guide To Stenciling Furniture

Submitted to What's New

Stenciling is a fun and quick way to add style to a piece of furniture. Once you find a stencil pattern you love, you’ll want to grab some painter’s tape, a stencil brush and some Modern Masters paint.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Piece of furniture
  • Stencil
  • Stencil brush (foam or synthetic bristle)
  • Modern Masters paint
  • Tarp, drop cloth or plastic
  • Piece of paper
  • Gloves
  • Painter’s Tape

Once you have your supplies and the piece of furniture you want to stylize (we chose a dresser), then prepare your area for some DIY fun! Lay down a tarp, drop cloth or plastic, just in case there are paint drips. Place your dresser in the middle and affix your stencil in the center of the area you want to paint. Doing so will ensure that your stencil work will look even. You can attach your stencil with painter’s tape or with spray-on stencil adhesive.

Put on a pair of latex gloves to protect your hands from paint. If you’ve chosen a foam brush or synthetic brush to apply the paint, the process is the same. Dab your brush into your choice of paint and dab off the excess on a piece of paper. Doing so ensures a crisp design edge.

Bounce your brush and paint into the stencil until the entire stenciled area is covered. Continue adding paint and dabbing off as needed. You’re looking for uniform coverage.

Once your stencil is completely painted, carefully peel off the painter’s tape, if you used it, and lift the stencil straight up so as not to disturb the paint. You’ll want to let your paint dry to the touch before you apply the next stencil as there will be some overlap of the stencil to the paint. After about 20 minutes, reapply the stencil so that it connects with the previously painted area and repeat the process.

After you’ve applied the stencil to the entire area you want to decorate, let the paint dry for at least an hour before applying a top coat. A top coat will protect your artwork for years to come.

We can’t wait to see on what items you try stencils! They’re an easy way to update an outdated piece of furniture.
