I designed and started this privacy fence project over 2 years ago. The design had to meet and satisfy numerous goals and needs:

1) It had to be made with repurposed materials, and materials I had on hand. Using mainly the corrugated roofing and lumber from my old horse shelter that collapsed in the snow storm (my horse was thankfully not injured).

2) It had to be portable. The fence was designed in four -(6) foot sections that could easily be moved with a hand truck.

The area where the fence is going will eventually be part of a bedroom addition to the house. So when the addition is built, I want to move the fence and use it elsewhere.

3) The fence had to be more fire-safe than a wood fence.

4) The fence had to shade my dog's kennel from the morning sun.

5) The fence had to have a rustic, peaceful, and meditative feeling to blend with the existing landscaping.

6) The fence needed to be 24 feet long, so I could use three -8 foot redwood lattice panels for the top. These panels were left from another fence project.

Unfortunately, Just as I got the first panel built, I was seriously injured in an accident (an accident unrelated to making the fence). This privacy fence project and several other projects came to a grinding halt. Having recovered from the first of three surgeries to literally "get back on my feet"; I decided to test out my increased mobility by completing a couple of the stalled projects. I'm grateful for this "Get it done challenge", and the motivation it gave me to complete this project. It feels "so good" to have finished this privacy fence. And my dogs are grateful for the additional shade.

My process- I picked through all the corrugated tin roofing from the horse shelter and selected the rustiest pieces I could find. I then cut the 12-foot roof panels into twelve -4 foot pieces using manual tin snips. Next, I sorted through the old 2X6 lumber and cut eight -6 foot sections. Next, I cut down the old 4X4 posts into eight -4 foot sections. These pieces were assembled into simple frames for the corrugated tin to be nailed on. (see photos). All the various nails used to assemble the panels were collected or purchased by my Dad over 30 years ago! The panels were then lined up together, leveled, and attached to metal stakes driven into the ground.

Once the panel sections were done, I went to work on the artist touches on the privacy fence. I had some pieces of tin backsplash left over from my kitchen makeover. So I cut these scraps into 6-inch squares. I first spray-painted them with Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X "Satin Deep Forest". Then I sprayed on Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X "Vintage Teal", followed by patches of "Satin Moss Green". I then cut out a template of tin to cover the center design on each 6-inch square. With the template covering the center pattern, I lightly misted each piece with Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X "Satin Expresso". The squares were then attached with construction adhesive. Without these beautiful squares painted with various Rust-oleum Painter's Touch 2X spray paints, this would just be an ordinary corrugated rusty tin fence. The beautiful rich colors, add a unique & rustic touch of charm to the privacy fence. I finished off the fence by cutting into pieces, an old length of rusty chain, and draped it between each turquoise & green tin square. I drilled into the corrugated tin and wired the chain pieces securely in place.

Finally, I wired the three redwood lattice panels to the metal stakes, as I placed the lattice on top of the corrugated tin fence sections. I'm so happy I was able to meet all of my goals and requirements in building this privacy fence. When the time comes for the room addition, I can disassemble this fence and easily move it to another location to be used again!

East Meets West Rustic Privacy Fence
