Bathroom vanity stain question

We're building a bathroom vanity (the legs are 4x4 cedar and the aprons are the higher grade of pine from HD).  I'd like to stain the base a dark brown.  Can you suggest the proper techniques and products to get a nice finish?

The same question for the top of the vanity; it will be the same pine.  We'll be topping it with a vessel sink.
