Refinishing a Hall Table

Submitted to Community Chat

I have a hall table that I want to paint black.  The table is pine with a light pecan stain on it and has a reasonably good top coat.  However, it is time to update its appearance.  The last time I refinished furniture was over 30 years ago.  At that time, one stripped the old finish, sanded, and then stained and finish coated the piece.  I suspect that there are faster and easier ways to simply paint a piece of furniture.  I have have heard about chalk board paints that can go directly over the existing finish.  A coat of past wax goes on top of that.  Are there other options that would use a paint other than chalk board paint?
