What should I use?

Hi Everyone,

I picked up this heavy-as-lead, mid-century-modern, Lane bedside table with caned front for $6.99!  Such a steal!  I have in mind to paint it navy blue and gold (see inspiration picture).  What Navy color should I use? The darker, the better and I'm a spray paint gal.  I don't want a chalky finish, satin I think.  Also, what gold paint would look really sharp on wood?  I've never used a metalic on wood before.  I want it to be really smooth and shiny. 

I'm a bit scared to paint this piece because it might be an authentic piece designed by a guy named Warren Church for Lane (anyone?).  Would painting it destroy the value???  Would you paint the caning?

Any advice is welcome!
