Upcycling a Typwriter

I am getting married next summer and saw a really cute idea on Pinterest to use a typewriter for a guest book (http://www.everafterguide.com/alternative-wedding-guest-book.html). The idea is to have guests type a message to the couple, which can then be saved in a box or added to a scrapbook or something. I think it would be a really fun/unique thing for guests!

I have been keeping an eye on kijiji for vintage typewriters and finally found one within my budget (see above). Now I need your help!! How could I jazz up this typewriter a bit to give it a new look? I assume it can be painted, but what type of paint would you suggest and do I need to use some sort of base coat first?
