Help with ideas for matting my picture!

I am currently working on picture/frame right now which has special meaning. However, I am stuck and can't move any farther. I was hoping that you all would have some ideas on what I could possibly do to make a cheap, inexpensive, "matting". I know that I could go out and buy one but since the frame and picture are all home made I really would like to have something home made and unique for the matting too! The size is 44" X 15". The frame will house the hand print cloth shown below.  Thanks in advance everyone! :)
