Submitted to Rust-O Resources

Color of the Year 2024 was recently launched, and to celebrate, our community team presented an exciting product testing opportunity to Creator's Studio Superfans : sign up to test the 2024 Spray Paint Color of the Year !

Rust-Oleum's 2024 Spray Paint Color of the Year is Satin French Blue.

Each Superfan who signed up for this exclusive opportunity has been asked to test out Satin French Blue on one of the follow projects:

  • an outdoor item
  • indoor décor
  • furniture
  • a small statement piece

Here is the project created by @Vimarhonor:

Tell us about your 'Color of the Year' project. What did you create and how did it go? Are you happy with the final product?

A color unification project with some decorative tweaking.

A change from haphazard mismatched misfits to a soothing sameness of a single color application to my random assortment of thrifted organizing and storage items.

This helped to improve the overall appearance to appear more intentional, less chaotic becoming a harmonious cohesive collection while also demonstrating/introducing a new trending spray paint color accent Satin French Blue.

Painting thrifted smaller desktop, tabletop, storage and organizing accessories.

Vintage drab pressed paper tray prepped by lightly sanding, open edges caulked.

Then sprayed.

Decoratively painted with an octopus.

Outlining in gold ( Couroc style) as a shimmery contrast

Cardboard mini suitcase and two wooden boxes cleaned and sprayed

Decoratively painted with deer, still celebrating last years travel memories.

Three wooden tags sprayed and intended to decorate with Nara deer mascot.

One tag destroyed using the htv. The htv and spray paint cured > 24h were quite unfriendly.

Switched over to htv on translucent paper to modpodge to remaining painted

Crackled finish wooden handle tote once red undertone with tan topcoat was sprayed.

Since piece is heavily unevenly textured by the crusted crackle finish, the previous several paint jobs layered texture was quite apparent —an application of some stashed 26 yo antiquing glaze was applied. Seemed to help improve overall appearance. Rubbing off glaze might have slightly changed the French blues tone.

Ceramic cow

Additionally it was a personal pleasure to try to better restore a vintage cow creamer that unfortunately broke off at several points ( tail, rear backend segment plus -udder, ear and horn chipped off) by mover handling with our last relo in 2015.

I tried patching and repairing it before but after spraying it with 2X Lagoon realized the repair was quite unattractive, unacceptable so the creamer was sequestered to hide on the top shelf in a kitchen cabinets shunned from viewing.

The piece got a more careful restoration, fill and sanding, reglazed before the Satin French Blue spray paint was applied. This time the damaged repair visual repair evidence was less noticeable and now the cow can be displayed directly with the intent to use it air plant holder,

After wooden tote was antiqued glazed, I decided to do this same treatment to the cow to better show the creamers detailed anatomical details.

Wire bins, finial ball and base assemblage, metal picture frame, metal dragonfly trio wall hanging and a basket were sprayed.

Thrilled with the changes, a beautiful blue thats sure to make me smile at every glance.

Happy the cow got a pleasing result and happy to make some more deer image memories.

Appreciate the opportunity to add this French Blue to enhance my creative display surfaces and workspaces so handsomely.

The Experience

I was surprised how far one can go while actively spraying my various items collected- deciding spraying another series would start the next day.

There were a few unexpected small halo ring flaws that were sprayed over.

I might have a question for the RO experts maybe @Katy๏ปฟ please?

If….I see ( octopus perimeters) a self caused flaw or defect, smudge, outline I wish to erase on a near complete decoratively painted piece with a sprayed background …. is there ……a way to do an isolated touch up without a full masking?

I’ve seen an influencer spray a little bit of spray from the can into a small cup, and apply a finish with the brush or sponge.

I tried doing this (tried paintbrush, sponge and swab) and the touchup is quite visible.

Is this the color the sheen or my technique?

Wondered….. Is there a way truly to do this spot touch up?

Or would a satin spray sealer help or worsen in an attempt to disguise the color change.

Personal Impression

Blue is one of my favorite colors.

My husband preferred to eliminate the blues in each and every room that we had existing in the home ( sigh) so I was very happy to have this amazing opportunity to add it back as an accent.

I think I prefer more intense deeper blue and white colors pallette together. There’s something classic and stunning about the shibori, Blue Willow and Flow blue dish patterns. I like the high intensity contrast.

Through I very much like and prefer Satin finishes I think I would enjoy this color more in a chalked matte finish —if I were going to purchase it again.
