To give a unique gift to office co-workers this year I made air-plant stands for everyone and added a gift tag and candy cane.

Production Guide

Step 1

In advance of the project I ordered 12 office-friendly and easy-to-care-for air plants from the PlantsForPets.com website. Learn more about the important mission to help at risk dogs and cats on the PlantsForPets website.

Step 2

Purchase a clear, select pine board measuring 2-inch x 2-inch x 4-foot and cut it into three different lengths of 2-1/2-inch, 3-3/4-inch and 5-inches.

Step 3

Sand each wood block using 120 grit sandpaper, and paint the blocks using your color choice of Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Premium Latex Paint from the ½ pint can. To paint, dip a cloth in the paint and rub it on the wood and then quickly wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth. When dry, apply a coat of Rust-Oleum Satin Clear Enamel for a protective finish.

Step 4

Cut 10-gauage copper electrical wire into lengths of 9, 10-1/2, and 12-inches and then drill a 3/4-inch deep hole in the center and top of each wood block using a 5/64-inch drill bit. Force one end of the copper wire in to the hole and then wind the last 4-inches of wire around a ½-inch dowel, (I used my index finger) to make a place to hold the air plant.

Step 5

Adjust the wire to hold the air plant separately for each plant because each one is unique. After each plant has loose-fitting but secure wire “nest” add you holiday themed gift tag and add a candy cane if you wish.
