Challenge Brief

Reflecting on the recent Why Do You Love to DIY? activity where we asked you to share a story about why you are interested in DIY and the types of projects you love doing; we'd now like you to use those ideas in our Trash to Treasure challenge!

“Creativity is making marvellous out of the discarded.” – Unknown

Do you remember a few months ago we sent our bloggers into the wild on a hunt to find thrift store items to repurpose or refinish? Now we’d like YOU to take on a similar task! Click here to check out the items our bloggers transformed.

The challenge is to find something at a garage sale, thrift store or possibly something in your basement that you can revive with your DIY skills. You can’t spend more than $20 on your purchase, so you’ll need to have a sharp eye for the perfect item! Take us through the steps of your transformation using Rust-Oleum products and show us the end result. We are looking to see how your item has been repurposed and/or refinished. What Rust-Oleum products did you use?

The Rust-Oleum team will select a group of finalists for the community to vote on and the top 3 crowd favorites will be our winners!

In addition to earning Creator Coins, we will be offering the winners gift cards to a home improvement center of their choice.

  • 1st Place: $1,000 gift card and a Master Creator badge in the community.
  • 2nd Place: $500 gift card.
  • 3rd Place: $250 gift card.

This challenge is all about getting creative, no experience or special knowledge required. For that reason, we are going to have two prize categories to celebrate both our bloggers and non-professional creators. Only non-bloggers will be eligible to win the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes listed above. We’d still love to have bloggers participate to inspire us with their skills, so they’ll be eligible to win some new Rust-Oleum products and of course major bragging rights!

The Criteria

  • Purchase an item from a garage sale, yard sale, or thrift store for no more than $20. Or find an item in your home.
  • Complete your Trash to Treasure submission (click here to find out what you need to submit).
  • You have a ‘before’ and ‘after’ photo of your project.
  • You share the Rust-Oleum products that you used.

Check out the projects we've added to our Inspiration gallery to find more information about Rust-Oleum products you could use and to gather ideas on how to transform your hidden gems.
