My Queen of Hearts Chair is a humorous play on the queen’s "Off with their heads" quote from “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland”. The creation is meant to be a garden piece that displays succulent rosettes that are beheaded when they get too big or leggy. The clock component resting in the seat of the chair is a nod to the White Rabbit's infamous pocket watch.

1. I removed the fabric, nails, and staples from the chair. Krud Kutter Adhesive Remover and a plastic putty knife helped loosen the glue and gunk left behind from the upholstery fabric. Next, the chair was then cleaned with Krud Kutter Cleaner/Degreaser, sanded and wiped down.

2. Zinsser Bull’s Eye Shellac was sprayed onto the chair Spray to prevent bleed thru from the mahogany wood, this was followed by a light sanding with 400 grit sandpaper.

3. A Dollar Tree non-slip plastic shelf liner was cut into strips, sprayed with adhesive, and attached to cover areas of the chair left damaged by the upholstery nails and staples.

4. To create an aged worn look I brushed on small amounts Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Premium Latex Paint in “Flat Black”, these areas were where the chair would receive the most wear and tear. After the black paint dried I rubbed a Dollar Tree votive candle over the black spots. The wax would prevent the next layer of white spray paint from sticking, allowing the black paint to show thru when I lightly sand the white spray paint.

5. Using metal snips, I removed the center disc of a galvanized metal clock and painted the clock with Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray in “Black Flat”.

6. Next, I cut a piece of plywood into a round shape that would fit inside the black clock and add support to the clock and planter bowl. I cut a hole in the middle of the round plywood piece so water could freely drain from the a planter bowl placed upon the plywood.

7. I sprayed a bowl shaped planter with Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray in “Black Flat”, rubbed wax over the bowl, sprayed it with Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray in “White Flat”, then rubbed off the wax and white paint. This created a distressed “aged” look.

8. I sanded two Dollar Tree wood hearts and painted the two hearts, the round “donut” shape and the chair with two coats of Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray in “White Flat”, sanding between coats. When sanding I applied extra pressure to the areas I had covered with wax, and when the wax came off the black paint showed thru.

9. The two white hearts were stenciled with succulent designs. Then, I applied two coats of Mod Podge to one of the hearts, ironed a Queen of Hearts image onto the heart, and applied three coats of Watco Crystal Clear Lacquer in “Satin” to the decoupaged heart to protect the image from bubbling when the final water-based sealant was applied.

10. Next, a Dollar Store embroidery hoop was sprayed with Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray in “Black Flat”. The two hearts were glued back-to-back with the black embroidery hoop sandwiched between them. I did this for two reasons: to add a decorative element to the hearts, and to have something to securely anchor the hearts to the chair with. The hoop with attached hearts was nailed to the chair.

11. The white donut shape was nailed to the chair, the clock was glued to the top of the donut shape, and everything was sprayed with three coats of Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Matte Clear Sealant Spray.

12. The painted planter bowl was nestled in the clock opening and Aeonium rosette heads I recently beheaded were placed in the planter.
