I wanted to create a piece capable of supporting the modern design elements often found in metallic accents. After bouncing around a few ideas, I chose to move forward with building a hexagon side table. The textures really flow well together from the natural wood elements, to the metallic marbled paint and trim, to the gold rush dipped hairpin legs. I had never done a marble paint project before and I am excited to use this method again in the future.

I chose Gold Rush, Copper, Burnt Orange, and Pearl White for this project because I felt these colors were the most complimentary to one another. All of the colors are beautiful, but in my opinion these four flow effortlessly and create a beautiful combination.

Here are the steps I used to complete this project:

1. Cut a 16" hexagon shape from 3/4" pine and sanded the edges smooth.

2. Applied wood conditioner and a mix of dark walnut & honey stain to the entire piece to enhance the natural wood element.

3. Taped off the section I wanted to remain unpainted and primed the untaped section with Rust-Oleum White Chalked Paint.

4. Selected Gold Rush, Copper, Burnt Orange, and Pearl White with accent colors.

5. For each paint color used: mixed two parts paint to one part 50:50 glue/water to create pourable paints.

6. Poured paints in a random pattern across primed surface, turning the hexagon board to create an even marbled distribution. (visit my facebook page to watch a timelapse of the paint pour facebook.com/seabeemarket)

7. Allowed the paint to dry for two days, then removed the tape.

8. Taped off the edges and painted a crisp Gold Rush detail line around all edges & removed tape.

9. Once dried, sealed the piece with a clear gloss wipe on poly.

10. Attached three black hairpin legs as the base to the table.

11. Taped off 3.5" of the bottom of each leg & painted with Gold Rush.

12. Removed tape and looked at the new side table completely starry eyed!

This project, like any project, had a few minor learning curves. Overall it was super fun to try something new and to step out of my comfort zone with some new colors. As the holiday season approaches I know I will find many more uses for these gorgeous metallic paints!
