Toilet seat help, please?

I have two nice, slow-close wooden toilet seats (well, as nice as toity seats can be) that the paint is wearing off from being opened and closed.  I tried spot sanding and spray painting, but it quickly wore off.  What process should I go through so that the paint does not wear off again?   Also, what products should I use?  Thanks for any and all advice!
