Neglected Table

Yes, this is a picture of my husband carrying a table on his head. This is how he shows true love. This table had been sitting in the park maintenance shed (in the elements) for over a year. I asked them about it awhile ago and they never got back to me, but just the other day i finally took it off their hands. (We don't have a pickup and it was only a few blocks so my husband just carried it home, it was good entertainment too). I'm excited to refinish this and put it in my dining room. I think the top is too damaged for stain, but some wood filler for the real beat up places and paint will do a lot of good. I'd love any suggestions on refinishing techniques, furniture painting, etc. I've painted a lot of furniture but I'm always looking to be more efficient. Thanks!!
