Uneven Spray Finish

I tried the Painter's Touch® Ultra Cover 2x protective finish in matte but it always looks blotchy. In other words, it is thicker in spots and shows a slight shimmer so you can tell that I didn't apply it evenly. The picture above doesn't really show this but it's already hung up and in use.

I have great luck with the type that you apply with a brush. Is there any trick or techniques that I could try to get a more even coat? I like the convenience of the spray but I'm sticking to the other kind for now.
