Veneer top table

Just filled a bunch of the chips and gashes in the veneer of this table. Going to sand and gel stain the top however there is a lot of bubbling on the veneer and I'm thinking of either replacing the veneer or replacing the table top it's self with real wood. Anyone have any suggestions or expierience with this?
